EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW:
You portrayed “The Voice of Marilyn Monroe” in the 1993 cult film classic, “Calendar Girl.” How did you secure that gig, and how did it change your life on both a personal and professional level?
Penny Marshall contacted Ron Smith Celebrity Look Alike Agency and auditioned at Sony Studios. I walked in and Penny Marshall swirled around in her chair and I barely fell over myself shaking her hand. It was a memorial event in my life. Penny Marshall is a star in it. In 2014, Jason Priestley wrote his autobiography and showed up, because I had remembered double dating him, my roommate and Brad Pitt in October of 1987. It was a real “Calendar Girl” moment.
Tell us all about the new album you have out, also called “The Voice of Marilyn.” It has 19 songs on it. How did you go about selecting the included tunes?
I write allot and have some songs that were recorded for me and these songs were chosen, because they have catchy hooks that can get stuck in your head.
Tell us about the “look alike” trend on Hollywood Blvd. You were a pioneer in that area. Is it still thriving today?
I was the first impersonator on Hollywood Blvd and the LA Times did a story on me in the 90s. Before the pandemic, it was very common to see Johnny Depp, Superman, etc… strolling for tips. I’d like to see the trend come back with tourism.
One track on your album was inspired by Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love. Were you a fan of Nirvana? What are your thoughts on the recent passing of Foo Fighters’ drummer, Taylor Hawkins, also a bandmember of Dave Grohl’s?
Sub Pop introduced me to Kurt Cobain to write together, because I was a recording artist under the name “Goddess Isis.” I worked as a temp and got “Nirvana” played on the radio. I also auditioned for “Hole” and befriended Courtney Love and took her to her first “Nirvana” concert in August of 1990. I was attacked in the spring of 1992 and woke up in the hospital with amnesia. I think Courtney Love has been a good friend by not mentioning me in the press, because my memories had to return in time. I do remember parts about my past, but it is a scary thing to suffer from and especially, talking about it publicly. They say it takes 20 years to get over it amnesia, but never really able to remember everything.
I don’t remember meeting Dave Grohl, but love the ‘Foo Fighters’ music. It is very shocking about Taylor Hawkins passing and I often think, if I had fame in my youth with suffering mentally, I would’ve end up the same.
What’s next for Cortney Page?
Box Starr Cortney Page on CRN Talk Radio, where I’ll be interviewing people in the industry. Maybe I should interview you, Michael?
That sounds like a great time! What interests do you have outside of your music and movies careers? Any hobbies?
I enjoy cooking and am a big list maker. I have lots of notepads full of to do lists.
