Edmonton’s very own Jon Martin reflects a global cry for peace and simpler times in his aptly titled Alt-Canadiana single, “Simple Things.” Recorded for his upcoming album, ‘This Could Be Our Year,’ listeners will experience a tapestry of sounds from various contributors around the world. At the hands of Jon’s
seasoned artistry and production work, “Simple Things” piano and drum precision is elevated by nostalgic guitars and lyrical brilliance. Few artists get everything right. But it is clear that Jon Martin is here for a long time.
“I wrote it amongst the sense of optimism that was stirring about in early 2021. It’s about relearning how to be normal and navigating basically where we are right now,” Jon says. Jon’s hero/mentor, Michael Brauer (Coldplay, My Morning Jacket, John Mayer) mixed the track, adding signature velvety textures and warmth to the song’s outro string arrangements. “Simple Things” from start to finish is a complete experience, tantalizing listeners for the entire album to come.
ABOUT JON MARTIN
Lifelong musicianship and artistry is the path set out for Canadian-born, Jon Martin. He has released original music across digital platforms since 2012, and planned to roll out a new band just before the pandemic. Like many professional musicians finding stride in the midst of a global catastrophe, Jon continued writing songs out of comfort and necessity through Covid times. He decided to start recording some of those songs, and found a way to do it by
collaborating and producing remotely with people from around the world. This includes musicians from the UK, US, Europe, and South America.
His new music appears out of a big life transition, where after working as a producer out of his home city of Lethbridge, AB, he packed up and moved to Edmonton, AB with his wife. Soon after, they had their first child. “We basically started a new life,” Jon says. “All of those things kind of melded together and became my upcoming new album, “This Could Be Our Year.” There is no second guessing that Jon’s environment and deeply reflective lyrics elevate his reimagined sound. For listeners of Alt-Americana/Canadiana, Country, Indie Rock, and Alternative Rock, Jon Martin’s music will stand the test of time, technology, and attention span.
