Fuzz guitar driven alternative rock that often dives in to calmer and slower atmospheres…That is the core of “Somber Distortion,” the new solo project from Joni Kyynäräinen. Although he is planning to make this a full-gigging band at one point, the project was born at the end of 2020. He wanted to combine his love for 80s and 90s alternative rock, with fuzzy atmospheric guitars and punk-style singing: Balancing the line between lo-fi and hi-fi.
“It might not sound like the most unique mix at first, but I think I`ve managed to cook something special here,” says Joni. “And although I am not a fan of the term ‘therapy project,” the process of making the EP was quite liberating.”
The first EP, titled “Primitive Skills” includes six songs and will be released later this year. First single “Burden” is out now, on the 13th of August ,on Spotify and other streaming platforms. A few more singles will follow before the release of the EP.
Everything on this debut 6-track release, titled “Primitive Skills” is composed, performed, recorded, mixed and mastered by Joni: “Right now I am looking for people interested in releasing and promoting my music,” he says. “For any parties interested in working with me, promoting or maybe releasing the EP (preferrably as a vinyl,) I am willing to share a private link for the whole EP in advance so you can check it out. So if you like “Burden” and want to hear more don’t hesitate to ask! Or if you want to maybe premier my second single “Courage” (releasing 3rd of September) on your webzine, don’t hesitate to ask!”
Joni is located in Kouvola, Finland. He is almost in his mid 30-s, and he has been playing most of his life in different underground bands. He also supports himself recording, mixing and mastering music for other artists/bands.
