Dallas-based electronica/ambient artist Violet Horizon is pushing boundaries of music genres. By introducing rock and experimental sounds into his music, VH is on the verge of becoming one of the most interesting musicians releasing music on the indie scene. We caught up with VH shortly before the release of his latest EP, “Azimuth”….
MTS: How did you come up with the name Violet Horizon? What does it mean to you?
Violet Horizon: I have always been fascinated with the colors of the sunrise and sunset. A Violet Horizon is a very relaxing and peaceful sight.
MTS: Has being from Dallas Texas influenced your music in any way? Has it helped or hindered your music career?
VH: Being from Dallas, Texas, I have grown up in church most of my life. My church had a piano in almost every room, so as a kid I was constantly around music and developed a love for piano at a very young age. I played in a church worship group when I was 14 years old, and within a couple of years I became the worship leader for the church. I feel like my southern roots have allowed me to flourish musically and I still feel that impact on the sound of my music today.
MTS: You have a new EP coming out, “Azimuth.” What does the title mean?
VH: “The azimuth is the angle between North, measured clockwise around the observer’s horizon, and a celestial body (sun, moon). It determines the direction of the celestial body.”
My wife found this term during her research and told me that it would make an interesting title for my EP. It also has to do with the Horizon. It seems very fitting for my project!
MTS: Describe your music to our readers, and what can listeners expect when they hear your music? Who are your main influences?
VH: My music is Instrumental. I love driving in my car and listening to relaxing instrumental music, so sometimes I feel like I make music for myself to have something chill to listen to while I’m driving down the highway.
My music combines simple, classic melody lines with heavier dirty rock drum beats, layered with trap and electronic influenced sounds. My biggest influences are Plaza, Darci, Coldplay and Kings of Leon to name a few. I love all musical genres and combine them in my own work.
MTS: What is one piece of helpful advice that someone gave you about being a musician, that you can pass along to our readers?
VH: If music is your passion and creating songs is what makes you happy, then never stop doing it. Even if you never get recognition, just keep making the music that makes you feel something.
At the end of the day, you are making that music for yourself. Music is all about turning what is inside your head into art. You understand your music better than anyone else ever could. It doesn’t matter what others think. If it makes you happy, then don’t get discouraged, keep going.
